How I Reduce Waste and Avoid Microplastics Every Day

Sustainability is often talked about in the fashion space, but for me, it extends far beyond my clothing choices. It’s a daily practice—a mindset that influences everything from what I wear to how I eat and drink. Avoiding single-use products isn’t just about reducing waste; it’s also about minimising my exposure to microplastics, which are now found in everything from our food to our bloodstreams.
The Everyday Choices That Matter
I carry my Frank Green aluminium water bottle with me everywhere. It’s not just about avoiding disposable plastic bottles, which are a huge contributor to environmental waste—it’s also about not drinking from plastic wherever possible. Studies have shown that plastic bottles shed microplastics into the water we drink, and while we don’t yet fully understand the long-term health effects, I believe in reducing the load where I can.
The same goes for my coffee. I never use disposable coffee cups, not just because they’re wasteful, but also because they’re often lined with plastic that can break down and leach into hot drinks. Instead, I always bring a reusable cup—because let’s be honest, coffee tastes better in a proper cup anyway.
Meal Prep with a Purpose
Every day, I bring my lunch in a glass container. The idea of heating food in plastic—even if it’s labelled ‘microwave safe’—is a big no for me. The research is clear: plastic, when heated, releases chemicals that can seep into our food. We already unknowingly ingest microplastics daily, but I believe in controlling what I can. Why take the risk when simple swaps like glass or stainless steel make all the difference?
It’s About Reducing the Load
There’s no escaping the fact that we all have microplastics in our system. They’ve been found in human blood, lungs, and even placentas. While we don’t yet fully understand the repercussions, the goal isn’t perfection—it’s about making mindful choices to minimise exposure where possible. Every small swap—whether it’s a reusable bottle, a glass container, or avoiding plastic-wrapped produce—adds up.
For me, these habits aren’t about restriction. They’re about empowerment. Making conscious choices in my daily life is a reflection of the values I hold dear—care, intention, and responsibility. And just like with my clothing brand, it’s about creating a lifestyle that feels good and does good at the same time.
