The Story
Devina Louise was founded in Sydney in 2016 by Devina Hofste, but the values behind the brand reach back generations.
Born in Cairns to a German mother and Austrian father, Devina spent her early years in Germany before returning to Australia and growing up in Sydney. Raised by her mother and grandmother, she grew up surrounded by strong European influences. Her grandmother spoke only German. Her mother was deeply conscious of the environmental impact of everyday choices.
There was also a long tradition of making things properly. Devina grew up hearing about her great-grandmother Gertrude, a seamstress in a small German town near the Dutch border who sewed clothes for her own children. It wasn't a business. It was simply part of everyday life. Her clothes were made to be useful, worn often, and built to last. Women in the town asked to buy them. She never sold a piece.
Textiles was Devina's favourite subject at school, and it eventually took her to Vienna, where she lived with her paternal grandparents and completed a fashion internship. Immersed in the culture she had grown up around, she found herself drawn back to the same principles that had always been present. Practicality, restraint, and buying less, but buying better.
Those ideas remain at the heart of Devina Louise today.
